Speciale King of the Ring

Ciao a tutti e benvenuti in questo speciale curato dal vostro EsTyLoN D EnIgMa, oggi vi parlerò di uno dei PPV scomparsi che ha in alcune delle sue edizioni scritto la storia della WWE.

  Fino al 2002 c’era un PPV nella WWE che era uno dei PPV forse più attesi dai Fan, e che era considerato uno dei “Big Five” cioè uno degli show più importanti dell’anno insieme a Wrestlemania, Royal Rumble, Summerslam e Survivor Series. La peculiarità di questo PPV era la presenza nella Card di match strutturati in una modalità torneo,per farvi capire meglio erano strutturati come il tabellone delle finali della coppa del mondo di calcio.  Il primo King of the Ring fu disputato nel lontano 1985, vent’anni fa, e fu organizzato per dare ai fan un altro show di alto spettacolo oltre a Wrestlemania. In totale dal 1985 al 2002 si sono disputate 10 edizioni del King of the Ring (nel 1990 e nel 1992 non fu disputato) e possiamo dire che alcune edizioni di questo show hanno segnato dei momenti importantissimi, anche di svolta (mi riferisco allo show del 1996 del quale parlerò tra poco) ma soprattutto di spettacolo per noi fans. Principalmente King of the Ring doveva servire come rampa di lancio per degli atleti che avrebbero contribuito con le loro gesta a tenere alto il nome della WWE, ma come tutti gli eventi di wrestling, anche questo ha vissuto dei momenti oscuri nei quali il prezioso trofeo è andato nelle mani di gente di dubbio valore come ad esempio possono esserlo stato Mabel (Viscera) e Billy Gunn.

  Sulle prime edizioni del King of the Ring non c’è molto da dire anche perché il suddetto torneo non aveva ancora acquisito l’importanza di un PPV, come ad esempio lo erano Wrestlemania e la Royal Rumbe e per questo metterò soltanto le fasi del torneo di quei anni.

Tra tutte le edizioni del King of the Ring ce ne sono state alcune veramente degne di nota per le prestazioni dello spettacolo offerto e per i momenti che hanno lasciato nel nostro cuore.

  1993: Quest’edizione verrà ricordata di certo per la fine della lunga relazione tra Hulk Hogan e la WWF.

Difatti quest’ultimo, rifiutando a detta di molti di jobbare in favore di Bret Hart al Summerslam 1993, cedette il titolo a Yokozuna in un match segnato da un finale controverso.

Yokozuna si era giovato dell’aiuto di un misterioso fotografo presente a bordo ringrivelatosi poi essere James E. Cornette, il portavoce del compianto campione samoano.

Il torneo,alla sua prima edizione “televisiva”, fu vinto da Bret Hart che sconfisse in finale Bam Bam Bigelow in uno scontro alquanto equilibrato.

Nei round precedenti Bret si era sbarazzato di due sue vecchie nemesi,ovvero Razor Ramon e il grande Curt “Mr. Perfect” Hennig.

  1994: Che la WWF puntasse decisamente su Kevin Nash (Diesel) fu chiaro a tutti nella primavera del 94,dato che il wrestler ricevette un push mostruoso vincendo il titolo I-C e sfidando l’allora campione mondiale Bret Hart al King Of The Ring.

L’incontro tra l’astro nascente della WWF e il veterano canadese si concluse con la vittoria per squalifica del primo,che tuttavia non segnò il passaggio di mano dell’alloro.

L’evento più rilevante del ppv fu però il lancio definitivo della carriera da single wrestler di Owen Hart,che si aggiudicò il torneo sconfiggendo in finale Razor Ramon con l’aiuto di Jim Neidhart.

The Anvil, grande amico di Bret Hart, decise di prendere le difese di Owen nella faida intestina che segnò l’intera annata WWF,culminando nel cage match di Summerslam.

1995: L’edizione a mio giudizio più deludente della storia del KOTR vide prevalere nel torneo ad eliminazione Mabel (l’attuale Viscera), che turnato heel da pochi mesi, sconfisse in finale Savio Vega.

Vega tuttavia aveva già dovuto superare ben tre match nella stessa serata, poiché era stato costretto a disputare un match di qualificazione contro I.R.S.,avendo preso il posto dell’amico infortunato Razor Ramon.

Come main event si ebbe invece un “tragico” tag team match con Diesel e Bam Bam Bigelow opposti a Tatanka e Sid Vicious, il duo heel guidato dal leggendario Ted Di Biase.

  La prima che viene in mente è stata la finale del King of the Ring del 1996, non tanto per il match svolto tra Stone Cold Steve Austin e Jake “The Snake”Roberts bensì per il post match in cui Austin dà letteralmente la vita all’era Attitude con il seguente discorso: "La prima cosa che voglio sia fatta è che quel pezzo di stronzo (Jake The Snake) se ne vada dal mio ring. E non voglio solo che se ne vada dal ring, voglio che venga allontanato anche dalla WWF perchè ho provato, senza ombra di dubbio, che lui non merita più di stare qui"

"Siediti, apri la tua bibbia, recita le tue preghiere e non farti più vedere. Parla pure di Giovanni (John) 3:16 ma ricorda che Austin 3:16 dice "Ti ho appena rotto il culo!"

"Tutto quello che devi fare è comprarti una bottiglia di whisky e scolartela nel tentativo di ritrovare il coraggio che avevi all'inizio della tua carriera"

"In qualità di Re del Ring voglio mettere sull'attenti ogni superstar della WWF. Non me me frega niente chi o cosa siano. Tutti sono sulla mia lista, quella è la lista di Stone Cold Austin ed io mi impegno a sconfiggerli uno ad uno"

"E per quanto riguarda il match per il titolo, ragazzi, non me ne frega niente se il campione sarà Davey Boy Smith o Shawn Michales. L'ora di Steve Austin è arrivata e quando ne avrò la possibilità non mi lascerò sfuggire l'occasione. Voi state guardando il futuro Campione WWF. Questo è il punto del discorso perchè Stone Cold ha detto così."

Ragazzi voi non vi immaginate neanche con che enfasi Austin ha pronunciato queste parole, l’arena esplose alle parole dell’uomo che da lì a poco sarebbe diventato la superstar assoluta della WWE e che l’avrebbe salvata dal calo dei ratings che subiva dallo scontro con la WCW il lunedì sera. Una cosa che non molti sanno è che quest’edizione la doveva originariamente vincere Triple H, ma fu punito per “l’incidente del Madison Square Garden”. Praticamente al MSG si tenne l’ultimo match di Diesel e Razor Ramon prima di passare in WCW, HHH battè Razor Ramon e HBK battè Diesel in uno Steel Cage Match, alla fine del match i quattro che erano grandi amici nella vita reale si abbracciarono rompendo così la keyfabe ( visto che erano 2 Face e 2 Heel) e Vince per via di questo segmento non previsto decise di punire HHH facendogli vincere il King of the Ring solo l’anno dopo.

  L’edizione del 1997 come precedentemente anticipato vede il trionfo di Triple H dopo un match combattuto con Mick Foley, che vestiva i panni di Mankind. Quell’edizione consacrò in maniera pesante il personaggio di Triple H, un uomo che negli anni a seguire avrebbe retto sulle proprie spalle il futuro della federazione.

  Un'altra edizione spettacolare fu quella del King of the Ring del 1998, non tanto per il torneo in se stesso che fu vinto da Ken Shamrock il campione di UFC contro The Rock, ma bensì per l’hell in a cell che coinvolse Undertaker e Mankind. Fu una vera e propria battaglia… Mankind fece due voli dal tetto della gabbia, il primo sopra il tavolo dei commentatori spagnoli, dopo il quale il match fu sospeso per cinque minuti circa per constatare le condizioni di Foley, il secondo volo fu molto più pericoloso e fu causato da una chokeslam di undertaker che sfondò il tetto della gabbia facendo cadere Foley insieme a una sedia che era presente sul tetto, e il buon Mick battè violentemente sulla sedia facendogli perdere un altro dei suoi denti. Nel DVD “Mick Foley’s Greatest Hits and Misses” lo stesso Foley ci dice che perse addirittura conoscenza durante il match, e che ci vollero mesi prima di tornare a vivere la sua vita in maniera normale dato lo shock anche emotivo che quel match gli aveva causato.

  Nell’edizione del 1999 c’è stato il dominio del torneo da parte della D-Generation X, lo Stable con al comando Triple H, praticamente alle semifinali 3 partecipanti su 4 appartenevano alla D-X. Il vincitore del torneo fu Billy Gunn,  che sconfisse in finale X-Pac.

  Il 2000 fu l’anno della consacrazione di un altro futuro Main Eventer WWE, cioè Kurt Angle, che in finale riuscì a sconfiggere Rikishi (certamente un avversario non così particolarmente ostico, come non era ostico anche l’avversario che sconfisse in semifinale cioè Crash Holly) in un’edizione del torneo non così bella…

  L’edizione del 2001 vede come suo vincitore Edge, che con il suo Tag Partner Christian ha letteralmente dominato il torneo riuscendo a sconfiggere in finale addirittura il più quotato e “King of the Ring in carica” Kurt Angle, ricevendo un push che comunque non lo portò all’epoca molto lontano.

  Nel 2002 ci fu l’ultimo King of the Ring, nel quale vinse Brock Lesnar  un giovane dalle enormi potenzialità che  piaceva molto per la sua abilità sul ring,sconfiggendo Rob Van Dam in finale. Non fu un edizione così eccezionale, anche se questa vittoria garantì a Lesnar la title shot per il WWE Undisputed Title a Summerslam ,perché piano piano il PPV stava perdendo l’importanza storica e anche perché le edizioni precedenti, quelle del 1999 del 2000 e del 2001, non furono all’altezza delle precedenti. Quindi il PPV fu eliminato dal calendario della WWE, scelta dovuta al fatto che il Roster era stato separato e che i piani alti di casa Stamford volevano avere solo 4 PPV annui nei quali entrambi i Roster erano presenti. Sinceramente spero che questo PPV un giorno possa essere rispoleverato e tirato di nuovo fuori dato che l’idea del torneo non era affatto male, l’unica cosa è sfruttare meglio l’idea del torneo facendovi partecipare Wrestler molto più quotati di allora:
